What is “Homebound”?

A requirement of home health is being “homebound.” There are several myths associated with the homebound term. Patients are allowed to leave home for medical reasons, to attend doctor appointments and to receive some outpatient services. Occasional absences from the home for non-medical reasons such as a trip to the hair salon, for worship services, a special family celebration or an unexpected event does not disqualify the person from receiving home health care as long as the absences are infrequent, for a short duration and it is a difficult and taxing effort.
